The Autostrada del Sole runs down towards the Gulf of Naples as Vesuvius grows on the horizon. On request, a stop at the Abbey of Montecassino breaks the journey with one of southern Lazio's most beautiful views.

At the excavations the time is yours: two, three, four hours among the Forum, the villas and the casts — your driver waits at the car park, no rush. On the way back you relax on board and are in Rome by evening, door to door.

A little history

In 79 AD the eruption of Vesuvius buried Pompeii under metres of ash and lapilli, freezing streets, shops, frescoes and its inhabitants' gestures in an instant. Rediscovered from 1748, it is now a UNESCO site and one of the most visited archaeological areas in the world: allow at least three hours and book tickets online.

The Abbey of Montecassino, an optional stop on request, is the cradle of Western monasticism: here Saint Benedict wrote his Rule in the sixth century. Destroyed and rebuilt four times — most recently after the battle of 1944 — it overlooks the Liri valley from 516 metres, with a view that alone is worth the stop.
