How far Fiumicino is from Ciampino
Ciampino airport lies south-east of Rome on the via Appia Nuova; Fiumicino lies to the west, on the coast. Between them are about 33 km of road: from the via Appia you join the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road, follow the southern stretch of the ring and leave it on the Rome–Fiumicino motorway, which runs straight to the terminals. The historic centre stays off the route, which is why the link is simpler by car than the map suggests.
The time depends almost entirely on the ring road. Outside peak hours the drive usually takes 35 to 50 minutes; in the morning and late-afternoon commuter periods, on Friday evenings and on Sunday returns it can take more than an hour. These are indicative values: an accident or roadworks on the ring changes them within minutes, and that is why the margin between the two flights matters more than the theoretical time.
By public transport the picture is different, because no train and no shuttle links the two airports with each other. The lines listed by Aeroporti di Roma for Ciampino go to Roma Termini, to Ciampino railway station or to other Italian cities: to reach Fiumicino you therefore go through the city, with at least two changes, and the door-to-door time grows accordingly.
Ways of getting from Ciampino to Fiumicino
There are four real alternatives: a taxi at the City’s set fare, the shuttle to Termini followed by the train to Fiumicino, the rail route with a change at Roma Tuscolana, and a booked private transfer. Ticket prices change without notice, so here you will find the route and the times and, for public transport fares, a pointer to the official sources.

The rule is the same as on the other routes: public transport tickets are paid per person, the taxi and the private transfer per vehicle. With two or more passengers, or with hold luggage, the comparison changes quickly, and the time spent on changes, at least two between the airports, has to go into the reckoning too.

The €55 taxi fare between Ciampino and Fiumicino is published by the City of Rome on Roma Mobilità, together with the other set fares (for example €40 from Ciampino and €55 from Fiumicino to addresses inside the Aurelian Walls): it is per vehicle, includes supplements and assumes a direct route with no detours. It applies from the official ranks at the two airports, in the white cabs fitted with a meter.
Why our airport-to-airport link is on request
Ciampino–Fiumicino is not one of the fixed-fare routes in our price list: unlike the links with central Rome, here the price depends on the times of the two flights, the vehicle category, the number of passengers and bags and any stop along the way. That is why we ask for the details of both flights and reply with a price per vehicle, valid for the date given and confirmed in writing before any commitment. The same published surcharges as in the rates section of the home page apply to the quote: 10% for departures between 22:00 and 05:59 and 20% for requests sent less than 24 hours ahead.
The published routes from the two airports
From the two airports into central Rome the fare is published, and it is the same for Fiumicino and for Ciampino: €65 for Economy+, €80 for Business and Electric, €100 for the Minivan, per vehicle and in both directions. To the port of Civitavecchia the fare starts at €150 in Economy+ from Fiumicino and €170 from Ciampino. How much time to leave between the two flights
Anyone going from Ciampino to Fiumicino usually holds two separate tickets, often with different airlines: it is a self-arranged connection, and no carrier is obliged to rebook you if the first flight lands late. The margin between the two flights is therefore the most important decision, even before the choice of transport.
Counting backwards
Start from the boarding closing time of the second flight, printed on the boarding pass, and subtract backwards: the time the airline asks you to be at Fiumicino to drop bags and clear security, often three hours for an intercontinental flight; the drive, that is 35–50 minutes in quiet periods and more than an hour at peak times; and the time to get out of Ciampino, usually 20–30 minutes after landing with hand luggage only and longer with checked bags. Adding it up, a margin of less than three hours between landing and take-off leaves little room for the unexpected; with bags to re-check or a long-haul flight it is prudent to allow more.
Hold luggage and check-in
Between two different airlines your luggage does not travel on its own: it has to be collected from the belt at Ciampino, taken to Fiumicino and dropped again at the desk or kiosk of the new flight. If online check-in is available, doing it before you set off removes one step at the terminal; check the departure terminal named by the airline too, because the passenger terminals in use at Fiumicino are T1 and T3, and the choice changes where it is best to be dropped off.
Flights that land in the evening
After 23:00 public services thin out and the connections between shuttle and train become the real problem, not the distance. In that period the taxi from the official rank and the booked transfer remain the two workable solutions; for our service the 10% night surcharge applies between 22:00 and 05:59. - The flight leaving Fiumicino, with airline and terminal if you already know them: they decide where to drop you off.
- Passengers and luggage, because the vehicle category depends on both: up to 3 passengers in Economy+, Business and Electric, up to 8 in the Minivan.
- Any special needs: child seats, a stop along the way, a planned wait between the two flights.
The meeting point at Ciampino
Your driver waits at the exit of the arrivals area with a sign bearing your name. The flight is monitored and waiting is included for up to 1 hour after landing, with no extra charge for delays. Ciampino has a single, compact terminal: little time usually passes between leaving the aircraft and the exit, and the meeting point is confirmed in writing in the booking anyway.
Arriving at Fiumicino
The vehicle drops you at the departures level of the terminal named by your airline. If the terminal is not known when you send the request, just let us know before departure; without instructions the driver goes by the airline and by the information published by Aeroporti di Roma. For the opposite journey, from Fiumicino to Ciampino, the same conditions apply: pick-up in arrivals at Fiumicino with the name sign and drop-off in front of the Ciampino terminal.
Payment, cancellation and assistance
You pay in cash to the driver at the end of the ride or online by card (SumUp) when you book; cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure. Before, during and after the journey, assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by phone, WhatsApp and iMessage: useful above all when the first flight changes time and the pick-up has to move.

If the margin is long: a stop in Rome
With six or more hours between the two flights, going through central Rome is possible, and the Ciampino–centre–Fiumicino journey adds up the two published links with the city. With children and pushchairs
Between the two airports the changes on the public route weigh more than elsewhere, because they are repeated with a pushchair and luggage. Documents and currency
Going from Ciampino to Fiumicino often joins a European flight to an intercontinental one: keep your passport, the boarding pass of the second flight and any travel documents to hand, because the checks at Fiumicino ask for them in sequence. Payment to the driver is in cash in euros or, if you would rather avoid cash, online by card when you book.
The other way round: from Fiumicino to Ciampino
The same rules apply in the opposite direction. The set taxi fare is identical, the public route still goes through Termini or Roma Tuscolana, and for the booked transfer only the meeting point, in arrivals at Fiumicino, and the drop-off, in front of the Ciampino terminal, change. Many flights from Ciampino leave early in the morning: in that case the airline’s check-in time is what counts, and the night surcharge applies to departures before 06:00.
