Getting Around Rome: The Transport Guide

Public transport, taxis and chauffeur services: the practical guide to finding your way around the city, whether you're planning a trip or have just arrived.

Scheduled public transport

Rome is served by a public transport network that includes the metro, buses, trams and some regional rail links, mainly operated by ATAC.

  • MetroLines A (red), B/B1 (blue) and C (green, still expanding) connect the city's main areas and many attractions. It's the fastest option for longer distances.
  • BusesThe ATAC bus network covers the city extensively, useful for areas not served by the metro, but it's subject to traffic and variable journey times.
  • TramsSome historic lines, such as 8 and 19, are handy for reaching areas like Trastevere and the Vatican Museums.
  • Regional trainsThe FL1 line connects Fiumicino Airport to Roma Termini in about 30 minutes; there is no direct rail link to Ciampino Airport.
  • TicketsThe standard ticket (BIT) is valid for 100 minutes on all surface transport plus one metro ride; day and weekly passes are also available. Always check current fares and validity on the official ATAC website before you travel.

Taxis, chauffeur services and alternatives to public transport

When you have luggage, are travelling in a group, travel at night, or simply want to arrive without a worry in the world, non-scheduled transport is often the most comfortable choice.

  • TaxisRecognisable by their white colour and taximeter, they can be found at dedicated ranks or booked by phone or app. Fixed, municipally-set fares apply for airport transfers.
  • Chauffeur service (NCC)Unlike a taxi, a chauffeur service is always booked in advance, with the fare agreed before departure and no taximeter. It's the ideal choice for airport transfers, events, ceremonies or business travel, with a dedicated vehicle and driver.
  • Car sharing and scootersUseful for short trips in the city centre, but not recommended with luggage or in a group.

  • Dinner, an event or an evening ceremonyA chauffeur service, for punctuality, comfort and no waiting around when it's time to head back.

  • The ZTL zoneThe historic centre has a Limited Traffic Zone active during certain hours: always check whether your accommodation or destination falls within it.
  • Transport strikesPublic transport strikes are announced fairly regularly: check in advance if your plans depend on buses or the metro.
  • Unlicensed taxisOnly use official white taxis with a visible licence, or authorised chauffeur services: be wary of anyone offering a ride unprompted at the airport or station.
  • Tickets and official appsBuy ATAC tickets at newsstands, tobacco shops or through the official app, and always check current fares and timetables before you travel.
