Three villages, three personalities

The Coast is not one place: it is a necklace of very different towns set into the same rock.

  • PositanoThe vertical one: pastel houses stacked above the sea, endless stairways, fashion boutiques and the main beach at the foot of it all. The most photographed village — and the most crowded.
  • AmalfiThe ancient maritime republic that names the coast: the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea atop its theatrical staircase, handmade-paper museums and a lively seafront.

The right Coast for you

There is no single answer: there is the right one for your time and your way of travelling.

  • First timePositano and Amalfi in a day: the two iconic names, stitched together by panoramic stops along the coastal road.
  • For peaceRavello: fewer crowds, gardens perched over the void and Villa Cimbrone's belvedere — the Terrace of Infinity earns its name.
  • For the seaPositano's beaches (Grande and Fornillo) and the coves reached by boat: in summer the water is the real star.

THE ROAD

The SS163: stunning — but not for the driver

The Amalfi state road is a 19th-century ribbon carved into the rock: a spectacle for passengers, a serious task for whoever holds the wheel.

  • Bends and sheer dropsThe driver cannot take their eyes off the asphalt: blind hairpins, manoeuvring buses and scooters everywhere. Only those without a steering wheel see the view.
  • Rare, expensive parkingIn Positano and Amalfi spaces are few and costly: hunting for parking can eat an hour of your holiday.
  • Full buses and ferriesIn season public transport runs at its limit: long waits in the sun and skipped runs are not the exception.
  • Summer traffic restrictionsOn high-season weekends the coastal road restricts private cars by plate number: with an authorised operator the problem simply isn't yours.
  • With a driverYou step out exactly where the view deserves it, and the car collects you beyond the crowds: Italy's most beautiful road finally becomes a pleasure.

The details that make the difference

Five habits for a flawless day on the Coast.

  • The right seasonApril-June and September-October: splendid sea and light, half the crowds. July and August are magnificent but demand strategy.
  • Leave Rome earlyOn the Coast the morning is gold: leaving at 7 means strolling Positano before the tour buses.
  • Stair-proof shoesPositano is a staircase with a view: save the elegant sandals for dinner and descend on real soles.
  • Swimsuit under your clothesThe temptation of a swim always comes: being ready for it is a master stroke.
  • Book your restaurantIn season the tables with a view go days in advance: choose your lunch before you set off.
