When to Visit Rome: The Month-by-Month Guide

Rome is beautiful twelve months a year: only the way you live it changes. Seasons, events, crowds and prices — here is when to come, for your way of travelling.

The four Romes of the year

Each season offers a different Rome: none of them wrong, all of them worth knowing.

  • SpringApril and May are the dream: long days, perfect temperatures and the city in bloom. It is also the fullest high season — Easter above all.
  • SummerJune brings endless evenings; July and August heat up in earnest: visit early and late, with a long break in the middle hours — like the Romans do.
  • AutumnThe Roman “ottobrata” is a true legend: golden light, mild air and a city that slows down. September and October are the expert traveller's secret.
  • WinterFrom November to February, the most intimate Rome: monuments without queues, sunsets behind St Peter's dome and Christmas lighting up the centre.
  • The golden ruleThere is no wrong month: there is the right rhythm for each month — and an itinerary built on the season always wins.

The dates that light up the city

Some occasions transform Rome: to experience, or to factor into your planning.

  • 21 April: Rome's birthdayThe city celebrates its own founding — 753 BC — with historical re-enactments, costumed parades and animated museums.
  • The azaleas of the Spanish StepsBetween April and May the staircase dresses in six hundred flowering pots: one of the year's most beautiful postcards.
  • 2 June: Republic DayParade along the Imperial Fora and the Frecce Tricolori over the centre: spectacular, but with half the city closed to traffic.
  • The Roman SummerFrom June to September open-air cinema, concerts and evenings along the Tiber: the city doesn't sleep, and it suits her.
  • DecemberLights, nativity scenes — from the monumental one in St Peter's Square on down — and shop windows: the centre becomes a Christmas drawing room.

The calendar of savings

Same city, different prices: choosing the right period means travelling better for less.

  • The true low seasonFrom after Epiphany to mid-February: flights and hotels at their lowest, museums without queues — and our destination fares at their most convenient level of the year.
  • November, the secretAside from All Saints' week, it is the most underrated month: the city is authentic, prices gentle, and the restaurants belong to the Romans again.
  • The first Sunday of the monthState museums are free: splendid on paper, extremely crowded in practice — weigh whether the saving is worth the queue.
  • Booking at the right momentFor Easter, May and long weekends move months ahead; for winter a few weeks are enough to find the best.
  • The honest weatherRoman winter is mild: 12-15 degrees by day and plenty of sun. With the right jacket, January sightseeing is wonderful.

Planning like an expert

Five habits that hold in every season.

  • Holidays book out firstEaster, Christmas and Italian long weekends sell out everything: hotels, restaurants and transfers need locking in early.
  • Watch the WednesdaysWhen there is a papal audience, the St Peter's area is full until noon: plan the basilica for another day.
  • August can be tamedVisits at dawn and after 6 pm, long breaks, water always: August Rome rewards those who adopt the right rhythms.
  • The events calendarMatches, the marathon and great celebrations change traffic and closures: with a driver who knows, it is their problem, not yours.
  • The best lightFor photos: dawn over the Fora, sunset from the Janiculum or Ponte Umberto — every season has its own golden hour.
