Rome's ZTL: What You Need to Know Before Driving

What the Limited Traffic Zone is, how it works, and why it's worth knowing before you drive (or get driven) into central Rome.

WHAT IS THE ZTL

The Limited Traffic Zone, in brief

The ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato, or Limited Traffic Zone) is an area of the historic centre where vehicle access and circulation are restricted during certain hours, to protect the city's heritage and reduce traffic and pollution. Rome has several ZTL zones, the largest of which covers much of the historic centre.

HOW IT WORKS

Checks, hours and who's allowed in

Hours and rules can vary between zones and over time: always check current information on the Roma Servizi per la Mobilità website before planning a trip by car.

  • Electronic gatesAccess to ZTL zones is monitored by cameras (varchi) that read the number plates of passing vehicles: entering without authorisation during active hours risks an automatic fine.
  • Time windowsRestrictions are generally active on weekdays from the morning into the early afternoon, with extended evening hours on weekends in some zones (such as Trastevere or the historic centre). Exact hours vary from zone to zone.
  • Who's authorisedResidents with a permit, emergency and service vehicles, and licensed taxis and chauffeur services are generally authorised to operate within ZTL zones, unlike unauthorised private cars.
  • Temporary permitsIn some cases, hotels in the historic centre can request a temporary permit for guests arriving by private car: check directly with your accommodation before you travel.
